Apple released macOS 14 Sonoma alongside iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 at WWDC23. For those who don’t know what WWDC is, it is a technology conference by Apple conducted every year. This event showcases a lot of software updates that Apple will bring to its ecosystem. This event announces the release of new iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and all the other software updates.

We have a lot of features coming up with macOS 14 this year, and some of them are expected to be the most demanded features by Apple fans. Let’s see what the macOS 14 update brings this year, along with all the devices you will get to see it on and when you can expect it to come to your devices.

macOS 14: Features, Compatible Devices, Release Date, and More

macOS 14: Features

Given below is the list of all the features that macOS 14 comes with, which includes-

Widgets On Desktop

Earlier, you could only access the widgets from the activity center, but now you can add widgets to your desktop. This allows you to keep certain widgets on your desktop so you can access them anytime. macOS 14 brings interactive widgets, allowing users to directly interact with them. For instance, you can add a to-do list as a widget and directly interact with it. Moreover, you can change the size of the widgets and move them anywhere on your screen.

Safari Browser Updates

With this update, we will be seeing some changes to Safari. Apple claims, the Safari browser is more focused on privacy. With new Safari updates, your private browsing windows will automatically get locked when you are not using them. This way, no one else will be able to see what you were doing, while your tabs will remain open.

Not only this, but Safari will also block trackers from tracking you online. Another update that Safari will have is the Profiles. Yes, you heard that right, Safari will have Profiles, so multiple users can use the browser and keep their history, bookmarks, and even extensions limited to their profile.

New Screensavers

Apple is including new animated screensavers to the MacOS 14. These animated screensavers will be slow-motion videos of real life locations. You will find screensavers by category, i.e., Landscape, Earth, Cityscape, and underwater.

Game Mode

macOS 14 will come with a new Game Mode. This Game Mode will improve the gaming performance of Mac (the only sector where Mac falls behind Windows PC). This Game mode will enhance the CPU and GPU performance while gaming. Not only this, but Game Mode will also reduce the latency of devices like controllers and headsets.

Apple has also introduced a game porting toolkit with which more and more developers will be able to port their games for macOS as well. This toolkit will allow games to natively run on Apple Chipset without any performance degradation.

Other Features

There are more features that macOS Sonoma comes with, including-

  • Users with hearing impairments will be able to use MFi hearing devices with macOS.
  • With Live Speech, users can type what they want to say and Mac will speak it.
  • Apple has also introduced new video conferencing tools and effects for MacOS 14.
  • Dictation is more accurate on macOS 14.

macOS 14: Supported Devices

Every new macOS update marks some Mac devices as unsupported. Similarly, there will be some older Macs that will not support macOS 14. Given below is the list of all the devices that will support the latest macOS 14-

  • MacBook Pro (2018 or later)
  • MacBook Air (2018 or later)
